Daniel Barnhart

Three years ago, UTLA members were in a desperate situation: 20 months without a contract and leaders (Perez-Guthrie-Valdivia) who wouldn't organize the members to win that struggle. By electing new leaders, we started down the road to make UTLA a fighting union again.

This year, members will choose whether to keep moving towards an organized and fighting union, or return to an ineffective leadership that talks big, but asks little of its members, and gets little in return.

I believe that we need a leadership that is committed to organizing members, to working meaningfully with parents and community allies, and to improving the lives of our members and their profession.

To win raises, like our recent 6%, to lower class size, to improve our health benefits and retirement, to stop administrative abuse, all require us to build power together . As NEA Director/Area Chair, I will work tirelessly to see that our sites are organized, our members are informed and empowered, and that our many voices are engaged in dialogue and unified in our righteous demands.

In more than 10 years as a classroom teacher, union activist, basketball coach, Chapter Chair, and representative to state and national conventions, I have developed the breadth of experience and depth of commitment to serve as part of your union leadership. Continuing to rebuild and strengthen our union, like teaching itself, is a huge job that can overwhelm the best of us. It takes a team to bring about the changes we need.

I ask you to join me in voting for the United Action team. North Area NEA Directors Daniel Barnhart Janet Davis Monica Whalen.

We Stand For:

  • Further Class Size Reduction
  • Increased local Decision Making
  • Substantial Pay Raises
  • Elimination of Top-Down Mandates
