Alex Caputo-Pearl

UTLA’s strength depends on building active school chapters, structures that support excellent teaching, and coalitions with parents and community to press for improved conditions. As a teacher at Crenshaw High, I bring leadership and passion to these efforts.

My background includes:

  • UCLA, AEMP, and Bilingual Committee Distinguished Teacher Awards
  • 7 years as UTLA Chapter Chair
  • 5 years, UTLA House of Representatives
  • 2 years, UTLA West Area Steering Committee
  • 2006 UTLA WHO Award
  • Founding member, Coalition for Educational Justice (CEJ)
  • 19 years community organizing experience

I stand with United Action for:

  • Further class size reduction and increased local decision-making
  • Substantial pay raises and maintenance of benefits
  • Elimination of top-down mandate
  • Dual language programs
  • Progressive tax structure to fund education
  • Culturally-relevant curriculum, including peace and justice studies

I bring experience in:

  • Decentralizing and eliciting new leadership in Crenshaw’s UTLA chapter
  • Initiating a parent-led movement, the Crenshaw Cougar Coalition (CCC)
  • Bringing an additional $3 million to Crenshaw to attain social services, technology, and reduced class sizes
  • Leveraging these resources to bring $34 million to 16 other high-needs schools
  • Working to regain Crenshaw’s accreditation
  • Strengthening protections for activists, after an outpouring of support reversed LAUSD’s transfer of me.

I ask for your vote so that I, with my United Action partners such as Duffy, Cecily Myart-Cruz, and others, can continue the fight for excellent schools.

We Stand For:

  • Further Class Size Reduction
  • Increased local Decision Making
  • Substantial Pay Raises
  • Elimination of Top-Down Mandates
