No Child Left Behind, (perhaps the most unifying issue in teacher union history),has taught us that. We know that there must be changes in our schools in order to better serve our students. We certainly can agree that high stakes tests, mandated, scripted curriculum, and blaming the teachers are not the way to create 21 st century schools that meet the diverse needs of our students.
Blaming the teachers for all the ills of public education is the excuse for ignoring the over-crowded schools, lack of needed support for students who are having problems, and all the other technology, materials and caring people our students need to succeed. Individually, we cannot fight to change our working conditions and hold the powerful accountable as well. In order to refocus the political agenda we need to be organized. Organizing is the process of forming relationships at your school site, discussing and finding areas of agreement and working through our differences so we can work together and begin addressing the real problems in education. Organizing builds power that expands as groups of schools start connecting. I want to work with the other members of the United Action Team to work toward a new agenda for public education, where we move away from the blame game and start working to create the schools where we want to teach and our students can learn. (Together, we can do it!) Vote for Janet Davis, North Area Director, and the United Action Team.
