Promises Made, Promises Kept

In the last 2 ½ years, under United Action leadership, UTLA has been able to win raises of 8 ½ percent, maintain healthcare benefits, and win class size reductions for the first time ever. We have accomplished this by replacing our practice of begging with one of mobilizing our members and building coalitions with other unions and community groups. As your elected Treasurer, I have worked hard to increase revenue and direct our resources toward our mobilization and coalition-building efforts.
Yet, as we all know, these gains take place in the midst of frontal assaults on public education. The federal government, the state, and the district have all turned on us as they deny us any say in curriculum and the funding necessary to do our jobs. The possibility of draconian cuts to education by our governor make the situation that much more dire. Deloitte and Tusch and the District showed us that we cannot even take for granted that we will be paid accurately and on time. We have had to fight for something as basic as a timely and accurate paycheck and protect our members from a district that had the audacity to try to come after us for money when they can’t pay us right.
Budget Transparency
Now more than ever we will need to strengthen our union. More of us need to be connected. With help of the once dormant Budget Committee, which I have revitalized, I will continue to include members in making budget proposals and work to improve access to budget information for all members. This is your dues money and you should know how it is spent. This is part of my message of Financial Transparency that I have taken to thousands of members at hundreds of schools.
As a former professional basketball player I know the value of teamwork so I urge you to support the entire slate of United Action Candidates
“The struggle for quality public schools needs strong, experienced leaders who will build our collectigve power. David Goldberg is one of those leaders."
