I am Jimmie Woods Gray, a classroom teacher at 24th Street Elementary School and I am asking for your vote for UTLA/NEA Vice-President.
During my 20 years of activism in UTLA, I have served in many leadership positions. Those years of involvement in our union including my participation in the CTA, NEA and the labor movement have uniquely prepared me to serve as an officer of UTLA.
As an elected NEA Board of Directors member for 8 years I have also worked very closely with both state and national teacher union leadership. Some of my experience includes:
- Current Chair of the UTLA-PACE Committee
- 20 year member and Secretary of the UTLA-PACE Committee
- 17 year delegate to CTA/NEA State Council of Educators
- 3 years member of the NEA Social Security Taskforce
- Current member of the NEA Standing Committee on Legislation
- Current Chair of the UTLA SRLDP Committee
This background will help me bring important programs and resources from the CTA and NEA to the members of our union. In addition, as your primary representative to the CTA and NEA, I will play a lead role in making sure that UTLA members’ views are heard loud and clear. Especially during the current state fiscal crisis my experience will help me bring together the resources of both of the statewide teachers unions to join UTLA to oppose budget cuts
Together we can stop the attack on public education and vigorously defend the rights we have won over the years. The members of UTLA and our students need strong advocates. I can be that voice but I need your vote. Thanks in advance for your support.
My Priorities are:
- Winning competitive salaries and benefits
- Securing Increased funding for schools
- Lowering class size in all grades
- Reducing mandated assessments and scripted lesson plans
- Expanding teacher autonomy at school sites
- Guaranteeing accurate paychecks and readable pay stubs
- Ending NCLB
- Building alliances with parents, community groups and organized labor
“As an NEA Board Member, I have fought for the rights of teachers and health and human service personnel for 8 years. I need your vote to continue that effort. Together we can stop the attack on public education and vigorously defend the rights we have won over the years. Our teachers and students need strong advocates and I can be that voice, as part of the United Action leadership team. Your support will be greatly appreciated.”
