As UTLA North Area Chair, I have worked to build our Area into a strong and responsive part of our union. We made many gains over the past few years and have much to build on in the future.

Though last year we gained a 6% salary increase and maintained our health benefits, the salaries of our most experienced teachers are still not where they should be compared to the rest of Los Angeles County teachers. UTLA members who dedicate their careers to the classroom should be rewarded with top pay for working in LAUSD. Furthermore, all employees deserve to have clear, understandable, and reliable paychecks each and every month.

With a weak and unfocused Superintendent coupled with a Governor who is unable to budget the finances of California, we face many challenges in the next few years. We must continue to build UTLA’s organizational muscle to meet these challenges. This District has shown through the payroll debacle and the continued growth of scripted programs and bureaucratic mandates that it undervalues its employees and local school sites. A strong union is imperative to re-focus the district’s priorities.

Year after year, LAUSD interminably draws out negotiations. If re-elected, I will push the union and district to start negotiations early and finish quickly. I will work to lower the class size caps in secondary and upper elementary classrooms we finally won in last year’s contract, and fight to maximize our health benefits.

Please vote for John Horta – AFT Board of Directors, A.J. Duffy – UTLA President, Joshua Pechthalt, UTLA/AFT Vice President and the United Action Team.

We Stand For:

  • Further Class Size Reduction
  • Increased local Decision Making
  • Substantial Pay Raises
  • Elimination of Top-Down Mandates
