Despite some recent gains, Central Area teachers agree that we are in trouble. Our students languish in overcrowded classrooms, while we struggle to interest them in a standardized curriculum. Charters circle like vultures, waiting to pick off the “weak.”

We work in a racist, class-biased education system, and teachers need to fight to stop this injustice. The politicians will not fix the system. Most of the money we spend getting them elected is wasted. UTLA’s focus needs to be on organizing the schools, one-by-one, patiently and urgently.

UTLA activists say that most members are “apathetic.” I disagree. When members are inactive in the union, it’s not because they “don’t care,” but because they understandably feel that their participation won’t matter.

My task as Area Director will be to help schools get more teachers involved in fighting collectively. Every site can win small, confidence building victories. And that is the crucial first step to turning things around
