I am Gregg Solkovits and I am asking you to vote for me for Secondary Vice President, running as part of the United Action Team.

As current Valley West Area Chair, as a chapter chair at a Year Round High School, and as a 20+ year UTLA Board member, I worked together with members and school sites to remove principals, win grievances, aggressively enforce our contract and push back on the mindless LAUSD bureaucracy and its stupid directives.

Over the last three years, the United Action coalition has worked hard to re-invigorate our union. UTLA had become bureaucratic. The United Action Team has worked hard to once again enforce the contract aggressively, reclaiming rights that UTLA members had lost through the inaction of the union. Last year, the UTLA Negotiating Team, on which I served, negotiated a 6% raise and, for the first time in history, a class size reduction.

If elected to serve as your Secondary VP,

  • I will work to empower teachers: We need increased local control of schools, with teachers playing a leading role in site governance, curriculum, assessment, and professional development.
  • I will work to support high needs schools: I want to work with chapters to resist the spread of top-down mandates to all secondary subjects, starting with the High Priority schools.
  • I will work to make schools safe: As a bargaining team member, I will continue to make it a priority to advocate for more resources to ensure student and teacher safety.
  • I will work to prioritize instruction: I will work with the Elementary V.P. and others to offer UTLA-sponsored professional development symposiums emphasizing the need for a broad and deep curriculum in LAUSD.
  • I will work to build UTLA’s political clout: I will work with PACE to expand UTLA’s presence in Sacramento and Washington to address budget cuts, NCLB, and other issues.
  • I will work to improve UTLA’s Communications : I will push ensure that the UTLA Website supports professional development, provides for exchange of exciting lesson plans, and fosters interaction between members.
