I did not take a vow of poverty when I became a teacher. The quality of education in LAUSD can be directly related to teacher salaries. Currently ours are some of the very lowest in L.A. County. Our communities want higher paid teachers because they know this makes our schools stronger. Recruiting and retaining good teachers is key. We must build relationships with school communities so that we can also support them in their needs and demands.
The promise of a free and equitable public education is under attack. We must continue to explain how NCLB is geared to dismantling public education. We have to actively oppose the Gates, Broads, Wal-Marts and Green Dots of the privatization movement.
We need more and more schools organizing around site-specific issues.
Whether it's safety, curriculum, or arrogant administrators, UTLA will grow stronger when individual schools are united. We must express the courage of our convictions. We must stand up for what we know gives our students the best chance for success.
