Committed-Passionate-Ethical
I am running for re-election as Elementary Vice President as part of the United Action team because it is imperative that we continue to have leadership that is proactive, aggressive, passionate, and invested in the future of our union, profession and public education
These are some of my accomplishments as UTLA Elementary Vice President:
- Challenged the district’s “one size fits all” mandates. I chaired a taskforce of expert classroom teachers who fought for and won a reduction in periodic assessments K-5 in Language Arts and Math. We must continue to fight for teacher control over curriculum, professional development and flexible implementation of academic standards.
- Brought Union-Led Professional Development to UTLA . AFT provided three weeks of National “Train the Trainer” Education Research and Dissemination (ER&D) to a record number of UTLA members. We want a Union that provides and supports high quality designed professional development.
- Fought to maintain and improve pay, benefits, and conditions. As Chair of the Negotiation Team and lead UTLA officer on the Joint Health and Benefits Committee, I helped negotiate a 6% raise, first time ever class size reduction and a class size cap, and the maintenance of our health benefits for the last two years. We must organize a fight back against the increasing threats to our pay benefits and to ensure an accurate and understandable paycheck.
- Supported all constituencies within our bargaining unit . I helped create a joint living contract committee to address specialized issues and negotiate contract language year round. I am a UTLA representative to the Joint PD committee where the coaching model and alternative ways to use banked time and buy back days are being explored. We must be persistent in opening channels of communication between all members … we must be unified.
After serving as an officer the last few years, I am convinced it takes a total team effort to do the work necessary to change our union and to fight the tricks and wrongs of the District.
That is why I urge you to vote for me and all the United Action Team candidates so we can continue to move our union forward
As your Elementary VP I have:
Delivered, with your help, a 6% raise and first time ever class size cap through my work as chair of the negotiations team
Reduced Elementary Periodic Assessments by bringing together a taskforce of classroom teachers
Brought Union-Led Professional Development to UTLA; Working with AFT’s ER&D program we are putting teachers in charge of their own professional development

Teacher control over curriculum and professional development with participation by the school community. No top-down mandates. Flexible implementation of academic standards.
Reduction in high stakes testing, standardized testing, and pacing plans – all of which penalize teachers and students.
Building genuine coalitions with classified employees, parents, and others to defend public education. |
