As a teacher who is still in the classroom, I believe I can keep the focus on the classroom and the needs of our students. I became a social studies teacher because of my desire to teach my students about their rights and the power that they have. As a union leader, I want to make sure that teachers also know their rights, and the power they have to change society.
I would like to use my experience of negotiating, organizing and fighting for teachers at the school level to include all North Area members. With declining enrollment and budget shortfalls, the challenges facing our union will be daunting. We as teachers face these same economic pressures and it is essential that we do not give up fighting for a pay raise and smaller class sizes.
I believe that I can, with the help of our teachers and an organized union, move us towards a stronger contract and a pay raise.
My experiences within the union are varied and include working on the taskforce to lower class size, organizing with the special election, and as a steering committee member.
